“Reclaimed tools and marine wood recreate the quiet strength of a grouper”

Cernia

In Cernia, the sea is not simply depictedβ€”it is embedded in the materials themselves. Weathered wooden planks form the body of the fish, displaying cracks, grain patterns and imperfections shaped by years of exposure to salt, sun and wind.

Across the wooden structure, reclaimed tools, rusted metal pieces, hooks, wires and nautical fragments create a layered composition rich in texture and detail. A serrated metal blade runs along the back like a spiny fin, while smaller components add depth and visual interest throughout the sculpture. Warm wood tones contrast beautifully with rust-brown surfaces and aged metal.

From a distance, the sculpture immediately reveals the powerful silhouette of a grouper. The strong head, compact body and driftwood tail convey stability and presence. It feels as if the fish has emerged from a forgotten wreck, carrying with it fragments of stories and former purposes.

The artwork celebrates transformation and recovery. Materials once abandoned are brought together into a new form that continues to speak about the sea from which many of them originated. Rather than hiding their past, the sculpture highlights it and turns it into part of the narrative.

Cernia brings the atmosphere of the coast indoors, combining maritime memory, reclaimed materials and sculptural strength into a single distinctive presence.
